Authentic and Rewarding Travel as a GG Volunteer

May 12, 2014

Our volunteer trip to Guatemala was a big success. We had a great group  that worked hard when on site and laughed hard when it was time to relax and see the country. We were able to deliver just about everything our host organizations asked for in their wishlists and, hopefully, we were able to make a small but positive impact on the great work they are doing for the...

Goodwill Globetrotting Goes to Guatemala

April 2014

Goodwill Globetrotting is headed to Guatemala on March 28th to show the world that "voluntourism" doesn't necessarily have to be a dirty word. We typically aren't a fan of the word ourselves but that's just because of the type of voluntourism that typically takes place around the world. We want to set an example of how to get the most out of your travel experience while...

How Jenny Feels Now

February 14, 2014

One of our team members wanted to share her thoughts on the adventures she had with us as a volunteer on last summer’s projects in Thailand and Cambodia and the feelings she’s having now trying to adjust to everyday life back at home. “Returning from any trip abroad is both exciting and daunting all at once; you are once again reuniting with the familiar foods, animals,...

If you would like to support this and project and the rest of...

The Volunteers’ Perspective

October 4, 2013

We like the photo below because it represents a theme we want to promote that the work we do is not about the helper. That’s why the volunteer’s face is not shown. It’s not about her. It’s about the kids in front of her she’s working so hard for. However, we realize our volunteers are important and we want them to know they’re appreciated. Until now, all our blogs have...

Trivia and Hiking and Bands, Oh My!

July 14, 2013

It’s been a circus around here lately as we’ve been successfully juggling a half dozen knives for two months without cutting ourselves or dropping a single one. Knock on wood. Remember our PREVIOUS BLOG? Well the days of running in place seem like a distant memory now. Our fortunes seemed to start changing within days of publishing that blog and, as an organization, we’ve...

At The Mercy Of Compassion

April 24, 2013

You might have already noticed but it’s been a while since our last blog. The reason it’s been so long is because the road has been bumpy here at Goodwill Globetrotting for the past few months. It’s difficult motivating yourself to sit and write a blog when there is no happy ending and no photos full of hugs or smiling faces to attach within. We love to share our...

Lady Bird Lake Clean-Up 2

Calling all Austinites!! It's time for another community clean up event. Goodbye, 2012; Hello, 2013!

January 11, 2013

Wow, is it 2013 already? To me that seems like a date they use in futuristic sci-fi novels. Well, the future is now and it seems like a good time for a Goodwill Globetrotting update. 2012 was a good year for us: we hit our 1 year anniversary, we learned a lot, we grew a lot and overall I think we were pretty successful. This year for our holiday project we "adopted" a...

All We Want For Christmas Is For You To Read This

December 2, 2012

Hello World, It’s Christmas season again and this time of year we all seem to be a little more aware of the needs of those around us. Over the past couple of years, we’ve developed a different perspective on the word “need” through our work with other non-profits. Working with orphans, refugees and the impoverished has taught us the true meaning of the word and drawn our...

What I Learned This Summer

November 5, 2012

As many of you already know, I spent this past summer in Thailand and Cambodia working on behalf of Goodwill Globetrotting. What you may not be aware of is just how much I learned over those four months. This trip was even far more educational than our trip to Peru the previous summer. Although that trip was also eye-opening, I learned so much in Cambodia about non-...

Smiling Hearts Field Trip & Toy Drive

June 2012

Smiling Hearts Association for Children (SHAC) is a fantastic small suplimentary school for disadvantaged children in Siem Reap, Cambodia. We spent the entire day there having a blast and, more importantly, the kids...

Capital Area Food Bank

June 16, 2012

On June 16th we gathered volunteers to help out at the Capital Area Food Bank in Austin, Texas. It was a small scale and casual even designed to promote the idea of volunteering within your community and to show people just how easy it is to lend a hand. Our small but dedicated group cleaned, sorted and packed 4,570 pounds of food. That's enough for over 600 meals in...

You Are Lions! Let Us Hear You Roar!!

June 9, 2012

Less than a week ago I was so frustrated with progress here in Thailand that I swear I wondered if maybe I should just quit. Is all of this effort a waste of time? Is our idea flawed? Or, am I just the wrong man for the job? I can’t tell you how many times last month I wondered if I was in way over my head. I don’t have a college degree, I have no experience in the...

Goodwill Globetrotting’s Peruvian Adventure!

September 21, 2011

After six weeks in Peru, Goodwill Globetrotting’s future seems much more in focus. What was initially intended to be a research trip ended up as a mostly successful first attempt at building our charity support network internationally. We have a lot of loose ends to tie up from home but we planted enough seeds on the ground in Peru that it may soon be our first fully...

Wrapping up LTCEA (for now…)

August 6, 2011

Greetings, Friends! Last Friday was the last day of LTCEA’s session for 2011. Instead of the usual scratch sheets of papers used to work out math problems and open reading books on the tables in the LTCEA classroom, there were certificates and gift bags and a bounty of food lining the tables that day. LaVerne, Sandra, Ursula, Charles and all the parents and grandparents...

Here are some photos! Of course, I couldn’t get teaching supplies without throwing a little touch of “Goodwill Globetrotting” in there for the kids. So I...

Hello World!

May 26, 2011

Hello World! It seems fitting that when we opened an account with WordPress to write this blog we received their standard greeting message featuring the headline “Hello World!”.
